Former President Mohamed Nasheed has met with the Commonwealth Special Envoy to the Maldives Sir Donald McKinnon. He is currently on a visit to the Maldives to review the political situation before the deadline set by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) for the revision of the National Enquiry Commission (NEC) set up by President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to investigate the events of February 7, is up.
International Affairs Spokesperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Henveyru-South constituency MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor said that Nasheed met with McKinnon who had arrived last week Thursday at the Hulhule Island Hotel (HIH) and that both men had talked of revising the composition of the NEC to make the commission more independent.
âœThe commission is not recognized by the CMAG and so discussions continued into ways to make the commission independent through revising its composition,â he said.
There are only three days remaining to the deadline which was set by CMAG almost four weeks ago and so far the government has showed no signs of attempting to change the composition of the NEC with the President himself backing the commission announcing full government confidence in the commission.
The statement issued by CMAG last month calling onto to revising the composition of the NEC was that though the commission is not biased it is highly unpopular with the people and had given the government four weeks to revise the composition of the commission and warned of strict action if the call is not complied with.
