Addu International Airport Company Limited (AIACL) has said that deadline for the airport development bid opened to companies in association with AIACL is till May 28. The opportunity to develop the airport was announced earlier this month, which had been open for both local and international companies alike.
The joint three company consortium agrees to extend the airport runway and to create a new seaplane base and to develop the runway surface.
According to the plan, the runway will be extended by 300 meters to the already 2,651 meters runway. While the land needs to be reclaimed in order to accommodate the extension of the runway, AIACL stated that discussions are being held with four banks to provide the financial support to the project.
AIACL states that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had also expressed interest in funding for the second international airport in Maldives.
AIACL is a joint venture company comprising of State Trading Organization (STO), Gan Airport Company Limited (GACL) and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
The company stated that its aim will be to halt all international operations and to develop Gan airport to international standards.
