Maldivian flights operator Island Aviation Services (IAS) Chairman Ibrahim 'Bandhu' Saleem stated yesterday that Bangladesh would be an ideal destination to commence direct flights from the Maldives. In response to a question from Haveeru, Saleem said that if the airline were to operate flights to Bangladesh it would be quite a profitable venture.
âœThere are large numbers of Bangladeshi nationals in the Maldives. Hence we could facilitate the travel of passengers and cargo between the two countries,â Saleem who had also been the IAS Managing Director for an extended period of time added.
He further revealed that as there are no direct flights between Maldives and Bangladesh, a study was being done to begin direct flights to the destination.
âœThe arrangements of the flights would be known after the study is completed,â he said.
Civil Aviation Authority had drafted an agreement earlier this month in relation to commencing flights between Maldives and Bangladesh.
The agreement would be under the accord drafted in 1985 which agreed to enhance assistance to airlines and amendments to the deal between the two nations.
The current agreement would allow the airlines to operate 14 flights per week between Bangladesh and the Maldives. It further sanctions airline operators to choose between Colombo and Chennai as the third destination.
Civil Aviation Authority further added that cargo flight operations would be unrestricted under the agreement.
