Decision in border control case can be made after assessment: New Controller

New Immigration Controller Dr Mohamed Ali has said that a decision pertaining to the now controversial project to establish a border control system in the Maldives can only be made after further assessment while highlighting that one of the issues notable in the case was a lack of communication. The present government had gone through with the project despite the establishment of the border control system assigned to Malaysia’s Nexbiz Company had come under allegations of corruption by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

In addition, the government had transferred Immigration Controller Ilyas Hussain as the State Defence Minister at a time when the project had been subject to intense scrutiny.
Dr Mohamed Ali further backed the lower court order which declared that the ACC had no authority to halt the project.

“The lower court wont issue an illegal order, will it? I think if there were any legal grey areas the lower court would have highlighted that,” the new controller who had assumed office last Thursday said.

“So I’m leaning towards a lack of communication as the issue here. In future, I intend to keep the media in the loop as I believe miscommunication has been the issue.”

Though the new Controller had sided with the lower court’s ruling, the ACC had made an appeal at the High Court, where the hearings have already ended and delivering the verdict remains.

In response to a question with regard to the allegations of corruption made by the ACC, Dr Mohamed Ali assured that such accusations would be investigated and action would be taken accordingly.

Former Immigration Controller Abdulla Shahid had revealed that the former administration had decided to halt the project when allegations of corruption had been raised.

However, the project had been commenced by the new government after it had assumed power.
