The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) late last night confiscated many laptop computers given by Malaysian company Nexbiz after entering the various offices of the Department of Immigration under a court order. ACC had attempted to raid the Immigration offices in the capital Male, Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) and Hulhumale yesterday. But after the Immigration had failed to cooperate with the investigation, ACC had obtained a court order and raided the Immigration offices late last night with the assistance of the Police.
An ACC official revealed that 75 laptop computers imported by Nexbiz assigned to install a border control system in the Maldives were being sought in suspicion of corruption.
Haveeru had learned that around 60 laptops had been presented to the Immigration Department, while almost all had been seized last night, according to the ACC.
Most of the laptop computers had been confiscated in the Immigration offices in Male.
Speaking during the press conference this morning to relay information pertaining to the most extensive operation conducted by the ACC thus far, Vice President of ACC Muavviz Hassan revealed that the operation had faced a lot of difficulties as some Immigration employees had tried to stymie and intimidate the investigating ACC officials.
ACC has pledged action against the Immigration employees who had tried to obstruct the investigation while any criminal offences would be reported to the Police.
“The Commission has decided to forward any criminal offences in the obstruction of our investigation to the Police. In addition, action would also be taken against them by the Commission. Stymieing the legal mandate of the Commission is a legal offence,†Muavviz detailed.
He further highlighted that operation had been carried out with the assistance of the Police under an order by the Criminal Court after the Immigration Department had refused to cooperate with the probe.
