ACC probes Nexbiz laptops to Immigration Dept

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has begun investigating Malaysian company Nexbiz presenting the Department of Immigration 70 laptop computers. The company had been assigned to install a border control system, work on which has currently been halted due to accusations of corruption by the ACC.

Haveeru has learned that officials from the ACC are currently investigating the case at the Immigration Department, Customs Service and at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA).

Vice President of the ACC Muavviz Rasheed said that the commission had received complaints that specific employees in the Department of Immigration received laptop computers and that it is currently looking into the matter. No details were revealed.

Immigration Controller Ilyas Hussain Ibrahim said that he “has no comment for Haveeru,” on being contacted.

The border control system to be established in the Maldives by Nexbiz costs around MVR500 million.

The ACC has sent the case to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office on charges of corruption against Immigration Controller Ilyas and former Director of the Finance Ministry and member of the Tender Evaluation Board Saamy Ageel in assigning the establishment of a border control system.
