PG in dialogue with ACC over former Controller Ilyas corruption case

Prosecutor General's (PG) office has revealed that it is in discussion with the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) over the corruption charges raised against former Immigration Controller Ilyas Hussain in assigning the installment of the Border Control System to Malaysian Company Nexbiz. An official from the PG office said today that a decision pertaining to the charges against Ilyas and Tender Evaluation Board member Sami Ageel has not been made thus far.

“It has not been decided whether to press ahead with the charges or not. We’re currently in dialogue with the ACC,” said the official.

Before the MVR500 million project was officially awarded to Nexbiz the ACC had requested a hold back of the project citing corruption, however despite ACC’s request the agreement was signed and the project had commenced.

The Department of Immigration had ignored continued requests by the ACC to halt work on the border control project.

Following the ACC filing a case at the Civil Court over the matter, the court had ruled in favor of the Department of Immigration which prompted the ACC to appeal at the High Court which is now on the verge of issuing a ruling on the case.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed had replaced Ilyas Hussain from the position due to the scandal, but he was reappointed following President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s accession to power to be removed from the position again a week ago following the surfacing of further allegations against him linked to the project.
