President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that he had instructed the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Home Ministry to negotiate on a settlement regarding the Border Control System project valued at MVR500 million, which has been assigned to Nexbiz Limited, a Malaysian Company. Speaking with reporters before departing for India President Waheed said that the project is huge in magnitude and thus there might be losses incurred if the project is to be halted suddenly. He also hinted that the government might be held accountable for financial liabilities if the project is halted mid-track.
âœI instructed them to first find a solution through dialogue. The court has issued a temporary order. Though the project has been halted for now both sides can take this opportunity to solve the matter through discussion. The project is being handled by the Home Ministry so the Minister himself will proceed with the discussions,â he said.
The Presidents Office has stated that though there are several questions about the project the governmentâ™s policy is to go ahead with the project, but also that the government will obey any court orders issued.
The Civil Court had previously ruled that the ACC cannot order the discontinuation of the project following which the ACC filed an appeal at the High Court which issued a counter order to temporarily halt the project.
The ACC had pleaded for a temporary stay order after citing that the government had acted against the ACC order to put up the project for rebidding after suspecting corruption in the agreement made between Nexbiz Limited.
