Police have revealed that five people had been arrested and were still being detained during the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest last night. The protesters had clashed with police near the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) building after MDP supporters had gathered in the area during the protest which commenced from the Usfasgandu area around 10.00 last night.
Police official claimed that four men and a woman had been arrested after they had attempted to stymie the duties of police personnel.
Although the five people were still being detained, their detention period is yet to be extended, Police official added.
âœTheir detention period had not been extended thus far. But we are currently investigating the matter,â official said.
The protesters gathered near the MMA area had hurled glass bottles at police personnel, while police had confronted the protesters without much restraint.
A police officer had also been injured when he received a blow to the head during the clashes last night.
A faction of MDP supporters had also gathered near the Supreme Court last night during their series of anti-government protests which has now been labeled as â˜direct actionâ™ by the party.
