Housing Ministry to take control over Usfasgandu area

The cabinet yesterday decided to hand over the 'Usfasgandu' area behind Dharubaaruge to the Ministry of Housing from under the authority of the Male City Council which has Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) majority. MDP currently holds all of its political gatherings in the Usfasgandu area.

The President’s Office stated yesterday that the City Council is abusing the terms of the agreement made with the Housing Ministry when the ministry handed over public property for administration to the council.

After discussion the cabinet decided to give the Housing Ministry the choice to withdraw property from under the authority of the Male City Council under the same policy through which they were handed over.

The council had sent a letter to the ministry assuring that it will follow the policy of the agreement when leasing property. However, the Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu had warned the council given observations proved otherwise.

“The Council sent a letter to the Ministry in a more compliant manner. So I welcomed it, but said that the Usfasgandu has been leased to MDP in violation of the agreed policy and to rectify it as soon as possible in a letter I sent recently. So I will withdraw the paper I’ve sent to the parliament till I get a response from them,” Muizzu said on an interview with DhiTV.

The cabinet decision had come about after 17 days from the Minister’s statement. Dharubaaruge is also as per the decision of the cabinet now under the control of the Housing Ministry.

The Local Government Authority (LGA) plays the role of a mediator after the issue of handing over Dharubaaruge to the Ministry escalated between the council and the ministry.
