MDP protests in Male and some islands calling for early polls

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had protested in the capital Male and some islets calling for early elections today. To that end, former President Mohamed Nasheed who is on a visit to Fuvahmulah had participated in the protest held in the island today.
Former Home Minister in Nasheed's administration Hassan Afeef, former Education Minister Shifa Mohamed and some MPs representing MDP in Parliament had participated in the protest held in Male.
Large numbers of MDP supporters had participated in the protest both in Male and in Fuvahmulah calling for early elections and the immediate arrest of prominent officials of the current government.
Unlike the recent protests, though the MDP protesters had ventured near the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) building, they had not stopped or gathered near the area.
Some protesters had pushed back the police barricades put up near the area which did not lead to much incident or clashes with the police.
However, Police in riot gear had been on standby for possible confrontation with the protesters.
