President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has arrived in India on his first official visit abroad since assuming office on February 7. In addition to Indian External Affairs Minister Praveen Kaur, Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, Maldives High Commissioner to India Abdul Azeez Yoosuf and Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives D M Mulay greeted the President and First Lady upon their arrival at the New Delhi International Airport today.
During his visit, President Waheed will meet with Prime Minister Singh and other senior officials of the Indian government, to discuss ways to further develop bilateral cooperation between the two countries, in the different areas of development.
President Waheed has met with the Indian Foreign Secretary Mathai tonight, who had been in the Maldives on two ocassions to mediate a resolution to the current political strife in the Maldives.
Prominent officials of the government claimed that during the President's visit, the two governments would refrain from discussing the ongoing political standoff in the Maldives and would instead direct dialogue in ways of further strengthening the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.
