Home Ministry has said that an expansion project is being carried out in Maafushi Prison to accommodate 600 more inmates. State Home Minister Mohamed Fayaz said that while 700 inmates are currently serving their sentence in Maafushi, many others sentenced to prison are loose in the island.
He said that the inadequate space in the prison was causing difficulties to take the convicts back to prison.
Fayaz said that they will start to transfer the convicts to prison after the project is completed.
“Many of those sentenced to jail are still on the roads. We cannot accommodate them here even if they are brought in. Hence we are expanding the place to accommodate 600 more inmates. We will start work to bring back the convicts who have escaped and those sentenced in their absence,†Fayaz said.
Referring to the fact that many of the places which offered services to the inmates had been damaged and half of it torched, Fayaz said that the places need to be rebuilt as well. He added that the work will commence with this year’s budget.
The government had decided to build factories to provide vocational training to inmates. Under the decision, the government had proposed to build a factory in Haa Dhaal Atoll Neykurendhoo related to agriculture, while another factory producing bricks is to be built in Maafushi prison itself.
Fayaz detailed that the brick factory was being built with the assistance from State Trading Organization (STO). He added that STO provides the machinery to the factory while the inmates would build the infrastructure of the factory.
STO has also agreed to purchase the bricks produced from the factory, he said.
