Mujthaba appointed to the Enquiry Commission

Government has agreed to appoint Ahmed Mujthaba to the National Enquiry Commission established to probe the circumstances surrounding the transfer of power on February 7. The move came after the government had decided to heed the warnings of the Commonwealth which had issued four week ultimatum to revise the composition of the Enquiry Commission after citing that it was not impartial.

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza revealed that in addition to the appointment of Mujthaba, a person nominated by former President Mohamed Nasheed is also to be placed in the Commission.

Abbas further detailed that the appointment of Mujthaba who is the moderator of the All Party Roadmap Talks initiated by the government to resolve the current political strife in the Maldives “was agreed to by all interlocutors.”

Mujthaba would act as the Chair of the Enquiry Commission in the absence of the present Chair Ismail Shafeeu, Abbas said.

He added that Nasheed had been given two weeks to nominate the fifth member of the Commission, and the opportunity would be lost if he failed to do so within the specified time period.

“The person nominated by Nasheed must be mutually acceptable by the government. Anyone who is politically stained would not be allowed in the Commission,” Abbas stressed.

Spokesperson added that when the changes are brought to the Commission, a Commonwealth appointed Judge would also be placed in the Commission as an observer.
