Maldives Police Service yesterday asked for a court order to take apart Usfasgandu, after the Police had been ordered by the Home Ministry to dismantle the area issued by the Male City Council to opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for its political activities till the end of next month. Police media official revealed last night that a request had been made sometime yesterday evening to the Criminal Court to obtain the order. He stressed that the decision had been taken to ensure that the dismantling of Usfasgandu is carried out within the contours of the law.
âœIf we are to dismantle the area, we would take every legal step before doing so. We have assessed the issue and decided to obtain a court order,â official added.
State Home Minister Mohamed Fayaz said on Sunday that the Ministry had ordered the police to follow through with assuming control over the Usfasgandu area from MDP and to hand over the place to Housing Ministry based on the legal opinion of the Attorney General after the City Council had failed to vacate the area.
He said that the Home Ministry believed that Usfasgandu area should be vacated without delay as stated in the regulations and should be opened as a leisure area for the public.
However the City Council had stressed that Usfasgandu area has been leased to MDP under the same procedure in which other political parties get to hold their activities on a temporary basis.
The council stated that the permit was given upon considering the current situation and to keep people from protesting on the streets of Male. The council stated that this would keep the people from protesting on the roads and would also facilitate a proper platform to carry out political activities.
While the government had intensified efforts to take apart Usfasgandu, MDP interim Chairperson Moosa â˜Reekoâ™ Manik had stressed that if the government dismantled Usfasgandu, MDP would make the Maldives Monetary Authorty (MMA) area as its new hub.
