PPM requests placement in the Enquiry Commission

Pro-government Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has put forth a request to place a representative of the party in the National Enquiry Commission (NEC) established to probe the regime change on February 7. During a press conference held today, PPM interim President Umar Naseer revealed that the request had been made following the decision by the government to appoint a person to the NEC nominated by former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Umar detailed that Nasheed had repeatedly claimed that he had been ousted in a “coup d’état” instigated by former President and interim President of PPM Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Henceforth if a representative of the accuser is to be placed in the Commission, then the accused in such a grave crime must have the opportunity to defend himself in the NEC, Umar explained.

“This is the only just way to go about things. Hence today we have requested President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to place a representative of PPM in the Enquiry Commission,” he added.

In a bid to conform to the call by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) to revise the composition of the Enquiry Commission, the government had decided to grant the opportunity for Nasheed to nominate a person to the NEC after agreeing to appoint a retired Judge from Singapore as the Co-Chair of the Commission.
