Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that with the changes brought about to the National Enquiry Commission (NEC) set up by President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to investigate the events that led to the transfer of power on February 7, it was finally independent. At a press conference held by the party yesterday it was said that a Judge from Singapore and a member nominated by former President Mohamed Nasheed will be added to the current three member commission.
MDP said that it is a great victory for the party and its supporters and that it was achieved through raising their voices alongside the Commonwealth.
MDPâ™s International Affairs Spokesperson and Henveiru-South constituency MP Hamid Abdul Ghafoor said that the commission has finally become independent as per the standards of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) and that all the terms set by the CMAG has been fulfilled as well.
âœThe terms are including international participants and to revise the composition of the NEC as mutually agreed by all political parties. The government has agreed to the terms and the current five member commission is approved by all political parties and international partners,â he said.
He revealed that though former President Nasheed has been allowed to appoint a member from his side to the commission, the government has attached certain conditions to it and so far has not approved anyone proposed to take on the position.
Machangoalhi-South MP Mariya Ahmed Didi, former Housing Minister Aslam, former Youth Minister Hassan Latheef, former Education Minister Shifa Mohamed, former Presidentâ™s member of the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) Aishath Velezinee and former board member of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Ibrahim Saleem had been proposed by MDP as potential members to the commission according to the government.
Former Youth Minister Hassan Latheef who is also on Nasheedâ™s team of lawyers detailed that the most important task assigned to the commission was to determine whether former President Nasheed was forced to resign and to investigate the events that happened before and after the fall of Nasheedâ™s administration.
He noted that pictures, videos, phone call recording and bank statements from various institutions can be accessed as part of the investigation and that the commission is allowed to do so.
The commission is to conclude its investigation by July 31. Latheef also interjected that the government setting up terms and conditions for the candidate to be proposed by former President Nasheed was absurd.
