The Commonwealth Special Envoy to Maldives Sir Donald McKinnon has said that following the changes to the composition of the National Enquiry Commission set up to probe the circumstances surrounding the transfer of power was now impartial, credible and broadly acceptable. The departure statement of the Special Envoy after his visit to the Maldives from May 10-15, read that the commitment by the government of Maldives to include a retired Judge from Singapore as the Co-Chair and a nominee of former President Mohamed Nasheed would enhance the scope of inquiry and strengthen the powers of the Commission.
“The Commonwealth wants to support an independent and impartial Inquiry Commission that helps the people of Maldives address the events of 7 February 2012 in a manner that moves the country forward in its democratic journey. Our efforts today have paved the way for such an effort. I look forward to former President Nasheed confirming a suitable candidate to join this Commission by the time it begins its work on 1 June 2012,†statement detailed.
The government had earlier announced its decision to appoint a Singapore Judge as the Co-Chair of the Enquiry Commission and had given two weeks for Nasheed to nominate a candidate who would be mutually acceptable by the government.
The person to be placed in the Commission by Nasheed must be a person who has been away from the political scene for a period of two years, and must also be a person who has not taken a specific stand in relation to the regime change, government had said.
In addition, the candidate must also be of an acceptable education standard, must be unprejudiced and generally acceptable to the public, which are included in the criteria specified by the government.
The decision to revise the composition of the Enquiry Commission came after the Commonwealth had questioned the independence and impartiality of the Commission which would be generally accepted by the people and had warned stronger measures against the Maldives if the call was not complied with.
