Extremely disappointed with the Commonwealth: President

President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that he was extremely disappointed with the Commonwealth but does not support the Maldives from withdrawing from the 54 nation grouping. During an interview with the Press Trust of India (PTI) on his current five day official visit to India President Waheed said that what’s most important is for the Maldives and Commonwealth to work together to resolve the problems faced by the country rather than pulling out from the Commonwealth.

Though the President seems to have a particular opinion on the matter several pro-government parties have voiced withdrawing membership from the Commonwealth and MPs from these parties have submitted a bill to the parliament to decide on the matter as well.

The President said that from the instant former President Mohamed Nasheed refused to acknowledge the transparency and integrity of the National Enquiry Commission (NEC) set up to investigate the events of that led up to and followed the transition of government on February 7, Nasheed’s supporters have been voicing doubt over the work carried out by the NEC.

He said that Nasheed and his supporters began voicing doubt over the commission without even a clue as to the way the commission carries out its work. He also alleged that the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) had also done the same, calling on for a revision of the composition of the commission.

Waheed revealed that the government is in dialogue with the Commonwealth to restructure the commission and a new member can be appointed to the NEC based on a mutual agreement between the Commonwealth and the government.

It was also noted that the Commonwealth had not pushed for early presidential elections as vehemently as it had done before.

The President is set to return back to the Maldives sometime tomorrow night.
