President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that discussions were ongoing with the political parties of the Maldives to revise the composition of the National Enquiry Commission established to probe the circumstances that led to the transfer of power on February 7. In response to a question by a member of the audience after a lecture at a ceremony held at Indian Council of World Affairs in New Delhi, President Waheed revealed that the government had reached an agreement with the Commonwealth to review the work being carried out by the Enquiry Commission.
He further added that the government was currently in dialogue with the political parties to recompose the Commission.
President Waheedâ™s statement came as only two days remain in the ultimatum issued by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) to change the structure of the Enquiry Commission citing that it was not impartial.
In a statement on April 16, CMAG had warned stronger measures against the Maldives if the call was not heeded within four weeks.
During the ceremony President Waheed stressed that he would welcome any suggestions to further strengthen the Enquiry Commission and assured that he would facilitate the completion of its mandate as independently as possible.
He further alleged that former President Mohamed Nasheed had questioned the integrity and impartiality of the Enquiry Commission without first determining the inner workings and functioning of the Commission.
