Home Ministry asked to take possession of Usfasgandu

Home Ministry has been urged to follow through with the matter after the Male City Council had failed to handover the Usfasgandu area being used by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for its political activities within the deadline issued by the Housing Ministry. The cabinet had decided to transfer the administration of the area over to the Housing Ministry citing that the City Council was utilizing the area in violation of the intended purposes.

However, City Council had failed to conform to the order by the Housing Ministry to relinquish the Usfasgandu area to the Ministry by last Monday.

Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu said today that every legal avenue had been explored pertaining to the Usfasgandu issue.

Hence, he added that there was “nothing more to be done by the Housing Ministry legally.”

“There is nothing we haven’t done in accordance with the procedure. All formalities have been followed and the Attorney General had viewed all our actions,” Minister detailed.

Muizzu revealed that the Home Ministry had now been asked to follow through with the matter and any decision with regard to the issue would now be taken by the Home Ministry.

Housing Ministry had claimed earlier that discussions with regard to the Usfasgandu issue had been held with the City Council on two separate occasions as part of the efforts to resolve the matter amicably.

On the contrary, City Council has stressed that any land plots out of the total of 32 entrusted to the Council can only be taken from under its administration if the regulations of usage are violated.

Council has repeatedly claimed that the Usfagandu area had been used in accordance with the specified regulations.

City Council had also said that Usfasgandu area had been issued to MDP on a temporary permit in accordance with the policy of issuing land plots to political parties.
