Male City Mayor Ali 'Maizaan' Manik has been summoned to the Criminal Court and had been questioned regarding the issue of the court order to dismantle Usfasgandu area. Alibe received a chit of summon yesterday to be present in court at 10.00 this morning. Speaking to reporters after attending the court, Alibe said that he was summoned to the Criminal Court to clarify information regarding the letter sent by Male City Council to the Criminal Court regarding a request by the police for a court order to dismantle Usfasgandu. Alibe said that he had answered all queries of the court.
Alibe said that he had met with the court’s registrar and that he had been assured that the court would act within the contours of the law, no matter who had submitted the case.
In the letter, Male City Council stated that Usfasgandu area is under the administrative power of the Council according to an agreement with the government. The council stated that the disagreement over Usfasgandu area was a civil matter and that the Criminal Court cannot issue an order to dismantle the place without a legal order or backing.
It also stated that the Council should have the opportunity to be heard at the court and that the Criminal Court cannot issue such (dismantling of Usfasgandu) an order without involvement or a say of the Council.
Housing Ministry had earlier requested the Home Ministry to implement the process of taking control over Usfasgandu area after the deadline for the City Council to handover the area to Housing Ministry had passed.
