New Parole Board begins releasing inmates

The new Parole Board composed by President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has begun releasing inmates on parole. The board composed last April had so far released four convicts on parole.

Home State Minister Mohamed Fayaz though the inmates had now been released, they had been enrolled in the rehabilitation program to facilitate the re-introduction to society for almost a year.

Inmates serving extended sentences in prison have also been included in such rehabilitation programs.

Home Ministry has claimed that convicts are released once they have served three quarters of the respective sentence and only after each inmate is assessed whether they are ready to rejoin society and would no longer be a threat to society.

Fayaz revealed that inmates up for parole are screened in accordance with the period of sentence and extent of the offence. Generally, parolees are inmates who have served long sentences in prison.
