MDP holds protest calling for early polls

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) yesterday held protests in Male and some other islands calling for early presidential elections. The protest held in Male started at 4:45 in the evening from Usfasgandu area. The rally progressed from Boduthakurufaanu magu to Majeedhee magu, encircling Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and back to Usfasgandu from Boduthakurufaanu magu.

While many participated in the rally, it also called to put an end to police brutality and to arrest the people behind the ‘coup’.

After the fall of former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government last February, MDP has been continuously calling for early elections. Commonwealth had also urged the government to hold early elections.

However, President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik’s government had said that an early election was not permitted under the current constitution.
