Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) interim chairperson and Hulhu-henveiru MP Moosa 'Reeko' Manik has strongly expressed disapproval over the order by the Home Ministry to the police to dismantle the MDP camp at Usfasgandu. MDP website quoted Moosa saying that the whole Male âœwill be made an MDP baseâ if the Usfasgandu is taken apart.
âœIf the Usfasgandu area is taken by force, MDP will protest all over Male and base ourselves in various areas of Male and aim to make MMA area our hubâ MP Moosa said in an interview before leaving abroad on a personal trip.
MMA area is where the parties supporting President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik held a series of demonstrations for around 20 consecutive nights during the last few days of former President Mohamed Nasheedâ™s administration.
Moosa stressed that the Usfasgandu area was issued to MDP legally and that any citizen who loves and promotes justice will not agree that the â˜coup governmentâ™ can violate these principles and use the police and security forces that brought about the â˜coupâ™ to violate this basic right.
He also questioned if the best way to use the place is to take Usfasgandu from the people and keep it for the illegal expatriates to enjoy or to keep it as a place for the locals to enjoy or carryout the activities of MDP.
MP Moosa said that the government interfering with the legal obligations of the Male City Council is dangerous and that any country that uses the police and security forces against their own people would bring no good to the society.
Even though the Home Ministry had ordered the police to dismantle Usfasgandu area, the police have said that they will only act within the contours of the law.
