Relatives of President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik have been appointed to the boards of many government owned companies, after he had recomposed most of the boards since assuming the term of office. To that end, Haveeru has found that family members of President Waheed are comprised in the Boards of four companies that had its Boards recomposed recently.
These include, Dhiraagu, Gulhi Falhu, Thilafushi and Housing Development Corporation.
A sibling of the first lady Ilham Hussein is a member of the Board of Dhiraagu while two members of Waheed’s family have been appointed to the Board of Gulhi Falhu.
In addition, family members of President’s spouse have been appointed as Board members of both Housing Development Corporation and Thilafushi.
Besides the companies, a brother of the first lady has been appointed as the Executive Services Secretary of the President’s Office while the President’s brother is the new CEO of the National Centre for the Arts.
Since taking the oath of office on February 7, President Waheed has stressed that he had not assigned any ministerial portfolios to members of his own party as he wished to run the government in coalition with the other political parties.
However, the continued appointments of relatives of both the President and his spouse to posts within government institutions and government owned companies have been met by strong criticism of many.
