DQP calls against encouraging moves to discredit police, military

Pro-government Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) has alleged that former President Mohamed Nasheed was attempting to discredit the police and military institutions of the Maldives and called on all other political parties in the coalition government against encouraging such actions. In a press statement last night, DQP further alleged that with the assistance of a few MPs, Nasheed was misusing the powers of the Parliament to disgrace the police, military and the government and create divisions and hatred.

Hence, encouraging such actions would be against the best interest of the people, DQP statement added.

DQP statement came after some pro-government Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) MPs supported the acceptance of the emergency issue submitted by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Maafannu-north constituency MP Imthiyaz ‘Inthi’ Fahmy on police brutality and cases of robbery involving police officers.

Amid tension over DRP’s move, a DQP Vice President and Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed yesterday claimed that the coalition between DRP and DQP has now been annulled.

In the statement DQP further stressed that the every party in the coalition government was involved in its functioning where members of each party have been placed in prominent government posts and other institutions.

“Hence, in a situation where every party is involved in the final decisions of the government, this party believes that each and every party in this coalition must work against and foil Nasheed’s attempts to discredit the government and stymie the police and military institutions,” the statement detailed.

The statement also claimed that the police and military had become victim to illegitimate orders during Nasheed’s government.

“The people of this nation want this political party’s coalition government to work in similar spirit despite the political rivalries,” statement added.

The debate on the emergency issue commenced with the bare minimum votes required, where only 23 members voted in favor out of the total 45 present at yesterday’s session.

Prior to the rant of Riyaz against DRP, Thulusdhoo constituency MP Rozaina Adam stressed that any issue submitted to the Parliament must be accepted and debated.

She further praised the DRP members present in Parliament Chambers for voting in favor of the acceptance of the emergency issue.

“There are a lot of issues we want to raise in relation to this matter. Hence the only solution is not to dismiss this issue. The way forward would be to debate on this issue,” Rozaina added.

Pro-government Jumhoory Party Deputy Leader and Kaashidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Jabir also reiterated Rozaina’s statement by stressing that any issue presented to the Parliament must be accepted and up for debate.
