Male inflation rate drops for the first time this year

Statistics revealed by the Department of National Planning show that the inflation rate in Male is down for the first time this year. The inflation rate in Male had reduced by 1.95 percent at the end of May from April this year.

Statistics revealed that the Male inflation rate was at 15.05 percent between April of this year and the same month last year. The inflation rate recorded between May 2011 and May 2012 was 14.69 percent. With the exclusion of fish products the inflation rate was at 11.30 percent during the period, which is a 0.37 percent decline.

Generally, an increase in prices was noted from furniture, household items, food items, goods and services last month.

Meanwhile, deflation was recorded from fish products, accommodation, fuel, water and electricity.

In comparison with May of this year and the same month last year, an overall price hike of 9.13 percent was observed from goods, where tobacco, household items, cafes, restaurants, goods and services were the major contributors to the increase in prices.

When the whole country is considered the inflation rate was at 16.53 percent by the end of April. But during April items including some food products, goods and services had a 0.13 percent deflation in comparison with March.
