As the vote counting still continues after Saturday's opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) general elections to elect a Presidential candidate, Chairperson and members to some other positions, MDP has revealed that former President Mohamed Nasheed, has received more than 22,000 votes so far. MDP elections committee chair and former National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) chairman, Ibrahim Waheed said that 259 ballot boxes were placed for the MDP elections to elect a Presidential candidate, Chairperson and members to some other positions and that Nasheed had received 22,375 from the 162 ballot boxes counted so far. He added that 210 members had opposed to Nasheed being the Presidential candidate for MDP.
Waheed said that Moosa â˜Reekoâ™ Manik, who had been elected as the party chairperson, had received 20,383 votes in favor and 1,684 voters had opposed while 390 votes were invalid.
MDP basic regulation states that if only one candidate competes for a post, the person must attain 10 percent support from the 48,000 members to get elected for the position. Hence each candidate must get 4,845 votes which is 10 percent of the 48,000 members, in order to get elected.
Economic Advisor of Nasheedâ™s administration, Ali Shiyam who competed for the position of MDP deputy chairperson received 372 votes. The votes did not meet the required 4,845 votes. However elections committee declared that Shiyam has been elected, as the position is actually elected by the party congress.
Presidential candidate, chairperson, deputy chairperson, many atoll constituency Presidents and Secretaries will be elected in the polls. The final results of the election have not been announced by MDP yet.
Waheed said that between 26,000 and 30,000 voters are believed to have voted but a definite number can only be determined after all the ballot boxes are counted.
