Political freedom lost because of MDP: Didi

President of pro-government Jumhoory Party (JP) Dr Ibrahim Didi has alleged that political freedom has been lost because of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Speaking at a press conference held by JP yesterday Dr Didi indirectly criticized MDP claiming that political activities held by the JP face obstructions from members that claim to be part of the “biggest democratic party.”

“During the political activities held on our trip to Alif Alif atoll Mathiveri, we saw from members of the ‘biggest democratic party’ that I just mentioned very undemocratic acts,” Dr Didi said.

Dr Didi alleged that the government of former President Mohamed Nasheed had introduced the National Health Insurance Scheme ‘Aasandha’ for political gain and that though it has been introduced; begging for health services has not declined.

“I don’t have to tell you all that Aasandha was introduced on December 22 for obvious political reasons because the December 23 coalition organized a mass rally calling on the protection of the state religion of Islam the very next day,” he detailed.

He says that despite insurance being available to everyone, people still have to resort to begging when in need to treat serious medical ailments and rely on the aid of the likes of JP’s leader Gasim Ibrahim.

Detailing the activities conducted by the party Dr Didi said that the party is liaising with the government in crime prevention and that the party will further provide assistance in approving and amending legislation relevant to the issue in question.

Dr Didi said that he is working to establish a cabinet for the party to further strengthen the structure of the party, but that several able figures hesitate to take a leading position which has proven to be a bit of a difficulty.

“The council also wants more technical, well educated members for the cabinet not just political figures. Due to the current political situation on the country some people still hesitate to step out from behind the curtain,” he said.
