Mariya calls on PG to litigate President Waheed for part in "coup"

Former chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Machangoalhi-North MP Mariya Ahmed Didi has called on the Prosecutor General (PG) Ahmed Muizzu to litigate President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik for conspiring in the coup which saw the fall of President Mohamed Nasheed's government. Mariya called on the PG to take action while speaking during a ceremony held last night to launch the report she had prepared on President Waheed’s involvement in the coup of February 7 at the Male City Hall which was attended by former President Nasheed and members of his cabinet.

Mariya had used several factors in her report to prove President Waheed’s involvement in the events of February 7.

It is stated in the report that the then Vice President Waheed had met with the members of the opposition coalition during midnight on January 30 at his residence Hilaaly Ge and that he was reported of having assured the coalition that night that he is ready to take on his constitutional responsibility. Waheed did not disclose the discussions of that night thus the report alleges that Waheed had kept confidential, his assurances to the coalition.

Mariya in her report stated that it is believed that President Waheed had been made aware of a possible coup with the help of several conspirators within the Police and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) on the night of January 30, 2012.

It is mentioned in the report that while the Vice President’s duty is to follow the instructions of the President and act accordingly, then Vice President Waheed had called on the Police and MNDF not to obey unconstitutional orders on February 7 not because he was instructed to do so.

Mariya’s statement included in the report reads that President Waheed had not condemned the unconstitutional acts of the Police and MNDF but had encouraged it during his nationwide address on February 7.

It was stressed that Waheed as Vice President had not attempted to contact Nasheed on February 7 to solve the crisis and had addressed the nation without any instructions from Nasheed to do so thus rendering him amongst the conspirators.

President Waheed had on February 7 in his nationwide address called for the protection of local television channel Villa Television (VTV) and on the same day when the Police took over the Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC) it was President’s Waheed younger brother Ali Waheed who accompanied them and on their takeover of the stations MNBC One’s live feed was cut off and replaced with VTV’s live feed which according to Mariya is sufficient proof to prove President Waheed’s involvement in the events of February 7.

The report cited Waheed not contacting Nasheed following current Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim’s call for him to resign without apparent reason as further proof that Waheed had been party to the plans to overthrow former President Nasheed’s government.

Factors such as the presence of Nazim, Abdulla Riyaz and current State Home Minister Mohamed Fayaz at the President’s Office, Nasheed stating that he “has” to resign during the cabinet meeting, and the fact that Nazim, Riyaz and Fayaz had asked Nasheed if the Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Shahid had asked for Nasheed’s resignation letter which was mentioned in the timeline published by the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) were considered to conclude clearly that Nasheed had been forced to write his resignation letter.

It was further noted in the report that during the rally held by the opposition coalition of February 2, President of the Adhalath Party (AP) Imran Abdulla had claimed that then President Nasheed would be arrested within five days the deadline for which falls on the day February 7, and that Imran was also amongst the members of the opposition coalition members that met then Vice President Waheed at midnight at his residence.

“Even this proves that plans were made to overthrow Mohamed Nasheed’s government with the aid of the Police on February 7, 2012,” the report read.

Based on the report and the proof it contained against Waheed, Mariya called on PG Ahmed Muizzu to take swift action.

Mariya had additionally stated in her report that though President Waheed had been sworn in as President according to the constitution, he cannot be considered President and that a few privileges available to the President is not available to him such as not being able to postpone any criminal charges filed against him.
