Gahaa Saeed rejects Inquiry Commission allowance

Ahmed 'Gahaa' Saeed, appointed to the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) set up to probe the circumstances surrounding the transfer of power on February 7 upon nomination by former President Mohamed Nasheed, has decided not to claim the allowance allocated by the government to its members. The government had decided to allocate an allowance to the commission members after the CNI was reconstituted on June 17. Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza told Haveeru that the members would be given remuneration in accordance to members appointed by the President to similar Commissions. He stressed that the figure would not exceed MVR75,000.

Saeed told Haveeru on Sunday that his intentions were to serve the people sincerely. He added that he had agreed to join the CNI not expecting any allowances.

“I told (President) Waheed even on the first day that I do not want an allowance. Deen (Vice-President Mohamed Waheedeen) was also present in the meeting. President said that he would allocate an allowance” He said referring to the meeting held before his appointment.

Though Saeed had decided not to claim his allowance, the rest of the members of the commission have not commented on the matter. CNI Co-Chair, retired Singaporean Judge G P Selvam, stated that his expenses are being borne by the Commonwealth.
