Nasheed tried to mask the reality behind MDP elections: Spokesperson

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza has said that former President Mohamed Nasheed's allegations that the government does not wish to revise the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) was an attempt to mask the reality of yesterday's opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) general elections. In response to a question from reporter after casting his ballot yesterday, Nasheed detailed that though President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik had claimed that the CNI would be recomposed by mid June, his successor had failed to do so even when the 15th of the month had already passed.

He further pointed out that the present actions of the government indicated that it had no desire to recompose the Commission.

Countering Nasheed’s claims, Abbas detailed that the new additions to the Commission including Nasheed’s representative to the CNI Ahmed ‘Gahaa’ Saeed and the retired Singapore Judge would arrive in Maldives by next Thursday and commence the work of the Commission as agreed with the Commonwealth.

Spokesperson labeled Nasheed’s claims in relation the Commission as “baseless and hollow.” He alleged that the “unfounded claims” by Nasheed was an attempt to disguise and deflect the questions raised by the people about the undemocratic MDP elections yesterday.

“Saeed will officially assume his duties (CNI duties) today. There have been no changes to the original mandate of the Commission. His claims that revising the CNI has been delayed are quite baseless,” he added.

“The reality is that the MDP election has no spirit of democracy. So those claims were to divert attention from that fact.”

Abbas also stressed that the MDP elections with a solitary candidate for every post was a violation of the principles of democracy.

He detailed that as the State spends a significant amount for the functioning of political parties including MDP, the party must operate within the contours of true democratic principles.

“Government also wishes Nasheed to renounce actions in the path of terrorism and instead chose to resort to dialogue in a demonstration of prime examples of democracy,” Abbas added.
