Coalition between DQP and DRP now broken: MP Riyaz

After some Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) MPs supported the acceptance of the emergency issue of Police brutality and cases of robbery involving police officers, Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) VP and Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed has claimed that the coalition between DRP and DQP have now been annulled. Speaking during the debate of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Maafannu-north constituency MP Imthiyaz ‘Inthi’ Fahmy's emergency issue in Parliament today, Riyaz stressed that “there was no longer a coalition between DRP and DQP.”

“This a clear message from me to the people. It is with great disappointment and misery I’ve had to make this announcement,” Riyaz said.

“It is clear that DRP supports the issue filed by MDP against Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz. DQP Vice President is the present Home Minister while the Police Commissioner is a DRP member.”

Though Riyaz has claimed that coalition made between the two parties on February 14, 2011 has ended, Haveeru was unable to obtain a comment from DQP President Dr Hassan Saeed or the other VP and Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed in relation to the matter.

Riyaz while heavily criticizing DRP stressed that “DQP would not remain silent while DRP inflicts the same mistreatment and disrespect shown to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.”

“I strongly condemn the joint efforts of DRP and MDP to create doubt and suspicion in the minds of the people against the Police and military institutions,” he said.

He further alleged that during the time as the main opposition, DRP had made “numerous deals” with the then MDP government. Riyaz also claimed that we are still witnessing deals being made with MDP while being part of the coalition government and after securing “all the posts and other benefits” through the government.

The debate on the emergency issue commenced with the bare minimum votes required, where only 23 members voted in favor out of the total 45 present at today’s session.

Prior to the rant of Riyaz against DRP, Thulusdhoo constituency MP Rozaina Adam stressed that any issue submitted to the Parliament must be accepted and debated.

She further praised the DRP members present in Parliament Chambers for voting in favor of the acceptance of the emergency issue.

“There are a lot of issues we want to raise in relation to this matter. Hence the only solution is not to dismiss this issue. The way forward would be to debate on this issue,” Rozaina added.

Pro-government Jumhoory Party Deputy Leader and Kaashidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Jabir also reiterated Rozaina’s statement by stressing that any issue presented to the Parliament must be accepted and up for debate.

“There have been no coalitions formed. Also all members must debate and settle important matters of the nation, which is the way the Parliament should function. The voting also should take place in accordance with that,” Jabir who voted in favor of accepting the issue detailed.
