Former President Mohamed Nasheed who has been chosen as the Presidential candidate of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) with 31,000 votes has been given the power to handle all aspects of his political campaign on his judgment through a resolution. The power was handed over to Nasheed at the 112th meeting of the party’s Steering Committee, through a resolution proposed by Manadhoo constituency MP Mohamed Thoriq which was seconded by Dhihdhoo constituency MP Ahmed Sameer at the meeting which was attended by 82 members of the committee.
Under the passed resolution Nasheed has the choice to take all decisions as he sees fit regarding his Presidential campaign, he has the power to create committees in regard to campaign work but has to inform the party’s National Council and Steering Committee of his decisions.
The 112th meeting of the Steering Committee meeting was chaired by Nasheed himself.
A resolution was also passed yesterday to decide who from within the Action Committee would chair the meetings of the committee. The meetings were previously chaired by former Vice President of the party Alhan Fahmy who has now joined the pro-government Jumhoory Party (JP).
MDP also revealed measures to increase and strengthen party membership, ways to increase party activities in the atolls and establishing party offices in Colombo, Sri Lanka and Trivandrum in India was also discussed.
It was also approved to hold a Steering Committee meeting every Tuesday and the committee is comprised of the members of the party’s leadership, members of the party’s cabinet and members of the party’s parliamentary group.
