No safety measures for worker who fell to his death: Police

Police have revealed that no safety measures had been in place in the building where a foreign expatriate construction worker fell to his death from the sixth floor yesterday. Police added that the man now identified as Bangladesh’s M D Abdulla fell off the sixth floor of Maafannu Muhdhu currently under construction, died from injuries while receiving treatment Indira Gandhi memorial Hospital (IGMH).

Referring to doctors, Police detailed that the victim had sustained serious injuries to his head and other parts of his body. The body is now at the mortuary after the victim’s family was notified, Police said.

Police detailed that the victim fell while trying to remove a wooden board in the ventilation shaft. The investigation has revealed that he had been working in the ventilation shaft of the sixth floor without necessary safety measures. Police also said that information had been received that after ensuring a safe work environment, workers belts and helmets had also been provided by the owner to all workers in the building.

Many buildings under construction throughout the Maldives do not have proper safety measures despite large numbers of construction workers who are mostly foreign expatriates are utilized in the industry. As a result similar accidents have occurred in the Maldives in the recent past.
