Former President Mohamed Nasheed has been elected as the presidential candidate of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) while Hulhu-henveiru constituency MP Moosa 'Reeko' Manik was voted as the party's Chairperson. Following Nasheedâ™s win, he would contest the next presidential election from the main opposition party MDP.
During the elections held yesterday throughout the Maldives, both the candidates as the sole contestants for the respective posts was elected with more votes than the required amount specified in the partyâ™s basic regulation.
The preliminary results of the ballot boxes placed in Male and the Atolls up until 11.00 last night indicated that both Nasheed and Moosa had secured over 5,000 votes each.
MDP basic regulation stipulates that if a single candidate contests for a post, the person must receive 10 percent of the votes of party members. Total eligible voters of MDP are 48,451 where 10 percent of it would be 4,845.
Ali Shiyam who was the former Economic Advisor of Nasheedâ™s administration, contested for the post of Deputy Chairperson. However, the result of the vote is yet to be determined.
In addition to the MDP presidential candidate, Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson, voters cast their ballots for various island constituency presidents, vice presidents and secretaries. However, as the votes were being counted last night, the results are not yet known.
The main opposition party detailed that it had not even established the total number voters up until last night.
Large numbers of voters had cast their ballots to the boxes placed in the capital Male; where voting that had commenced at 9.00 in the morning was extended till 7.00 last night after it was scheduled to be closed off at 4.00 in the evening.
