MDP condemns intimidation of people who oppose the "coup"

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has claimed that the government was intimidating the people who oppose the "coup" assisted by members of the police and military, while strongly condemning the action. In a statement issued by MDP condemning the police summoning of Machchangoalhi-north constituency MP Mariya Ahmed Didi today, the party labeled it as a cowardly act of intimidation.

In addition to the summoning of Mariya, MDP also condemned the arrest and subsequent detention of former Head of Police Intelligence Mohamed Hameed for allegations of leaking confidential information.

The main opposition party further alleged that the attempts of intimidating the people who independently and openly oppose the “coup” were a ploy to undermine the rights to freedom of expression.

MDP pledged that such cheap tactics of the government would not hinder or stymie its efforts to prove that the rule had been seized from the party in a “coup” and its push for early presidential elections.

Police media official had stated that Mariya was being summoned to police in relation to the violence caused on May 29 and 30, of this year. He said that Mariya is being suspected of conspiring along with some others in inciting and planning the violence.

She is also accused of bringing out gangs out on to the streets and encouraging them to attack policemen and police property.
