MP Mariya being summoned to Police today

Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson and Mahchangolhi-North MP Mariya Ahmed Didi has been summoned to the police. MP Mariya is to be present at 2.30 this afternoon. Police media official stated that Mariya is being summoned to police in relation to the violence caused on May 29 and 30, of this year. He said that Mariya is being
suspected of conspiring along with some others in inciting and planning the violence.

She is also accused of bringing out gangs out on to the streets and encouraging them to attack policemen and police property.

Police media official stated that the violence in Male caused by MDP was in relation to the search and dismantling of Usfasgandu by the police.

Initially police had requested Mariya to present herself on Thursday but Police later stated that the time of the summoning had been revised upon request from Mariya to a more convenient time.

Haveeru was unable reach to obtain a comment on the matter from Mariya on Tuesday night. However MDP spokesperson MP Imthiyaz Fahmy told Haveeru that he is aware that Mariya is being summoned regarding a case about an attack on a police officer.

He said that the police brutality on Mariya herself on February 7, 2012, is not being probed while she is being summoned regarding an attack on a police officer, to keep MDP members in a constant “state of fear”.
