As the window to apply for the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leadership closed yesterday, the party revealed that only Machchangoalhi-north MP Mariya Ahmed Didi had applied for the President's post while Hithadhoo-north MP Mohamed Aslam was the solitary candidate for Vice President. The election for the two posts has been scheduled for August 31.
MDP further revealed that the party’s elections committee would decide on the candidacy of Mariya and Aslam and the resulting decision would be announced within three days.
The party also said that according to the elections regulation, any candidate contesting for the President and Vice President’s post must submit applications with the support of 300 party members.
Both the President and VP’s post are up for election after the MDP National Congress had ousted former President Dr Ibrahim Didi and Vice President Alhan Fahmy through a vote of no confidence last month.
