Attack on security forces, an attack against the State: President

President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik said last night that every attack on Police or Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) personnel is an attack against the State. During a phone interview with VTV regarding the stabbing of Police Lance Corporal Adam Haleem the President said that the Police and MNDF personnel should not be attacked under any circumstances and that such acts must be stopped.

He said that law enforcement agencies are not attacked in other countries around the world and that the biggest reason why such incidents happen is because a certain group is creating division and hatred amongst the people and that the situation has reached to this extent because organisations such as the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) have not taken any action.

â€œSuch acts need to be stopped. This is why we have created independent institutions such as the Broadcasting Commission. Matters have reached to this extent because these institutions have not taken necessary action. This is also why need to stop of the actions those trying to create turmoil. I hope that the law enforcement agencies will step up counter action in this matter more than before. This can only be done with the cooperation of the Prosecutor General’s Office and Attorney General’s Office,” he said.

He stressed that no democracy in the world encourage violence and murder and that everyone needs to join hands to stop such incidents.

“We have lived in other countries of the world. In these countries they do not foster hatred towards their governments. We have this notion that it is fine to do almost anything in the name of democracy,” he said.
