A policeman on duty was stabbed to death around midnight in Kaafu Atoll Kaashidhoo, making it the ninth murder so far this year. Police has said that Lance Corporal Adam Haleem, 26, was stabbed to death last night as he was on his way for duty at around midnight last night by Mohamed Samah. Police further stated that Samah was released to house arrest on Sunday.
âœAdam called the police station and told them to come over to arrest (Samah) as he saw Samah on a bicycle while under house arrest. He was on the call (with the police station) as he reached his (Samaahâ™s) house. As Adam reached up to the place, he (Samah) closed the door.â a family member told Haveeru.
Some family members said that Samah attacked Adam with a butcher sized knife while he was on the phone. He was stabbed from the front side.
âœWhen he was stabbed, it was said that he cried out (to the police) that he had been stabbed, come soon,â the family said.
Council members and witnesses report that Adam was still alive when the police had brought him from the crime scene to the hospital in their vehicle. Adam suffered long, deep wounds and is said to have died while receiving treatment in the health centre. Adam, who is the father of a three month old boy, is in his second marriage.
Samah has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing Adam however the police did not reveal any further details of the case.
Word around the island is that Samah is a repeat offender while many of his cases are still being investigated.
Adamâ™s body was brought to Maleâ™ this morning. President Dr. Mohamed Waheed, government ministers and policemen from different ranks were present at the scene to offer their sincere condolences to the family.
While Adamâ™s funeral was held at the Islamic Centre, he was buried in Galolhu cemetery in full honor. President Mohamed Waheed had declared that the national flag would be flown at half-mast today.
