President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik last night stressed that forbearance must not be perceived as a sign of the weakness of the government. Speaking during the opening ceremony of a new social centre in Kaafu Atoll Huraa, President Waheed claimed that the government would remain to be patient even though some were temporarily flocking to the streets of capital Male, and would continue to engage in dialogue with foreign diplomats.
However, President stressed that such tolerance must not be perceived as a sign of weakness and warned that strict action would be taken if necessary.
President Waheed further added that the government would continue to act with prudence and noted the peaceful manner in which the government had acted in the recent past.
The attempts by some to mislead the truth would not be successful, he added.
The ceremony in Huraa had been attended by pro-government Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, some cabinet ministers and prominent officials of both DRP and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Huraa Council revealed that the social centre had been constructed with the assistance of private individuals.
