MDP must know that overthrowing a government by taking to the streets is not easy: President

Despite a pledge by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to continue with the ongoing protests until the government is overthrown, President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has claimed that MDP must now know that toppling a government by taking to the streets is no easy task. In an interview with Haveeru after inaugurating a new dialysis centre in Hulhumale Hospital, President Waheed said that the ongoing MDP led protests were not in the best interest of anyone.
While highlighting the devoted execution of the duties of the security forces, he further said that MDP must now be aware that ousting a government by taking to the streets is not so easily achieved.
President also claimed that the government was engaged in efforts to maintain peace for the people with extreme forbearance and tolerance.
“I assure the people that Inshah Allah everything will turn out well. There’s nothing we should be worry about,” he added.
Waheed noted that his administration was governing the nation peacefully and assured that the current political strife would indeed be resolved.
“But as a result of these protests, people with no political affiliations or involvement are feeling its adverse effects. Government and private property are being damaged in the process. Hence I strongly condemn such actions.”
