Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) has ordered RaajjeTV for a public apology citing that the opposition television station had reported news accusing policemen of stealing petrol from a motorcycle without proper verification of the incident. MBC warned RaajjeTV in a letter over the issue of the allegations from the station that police officers had stolen petrol from the motorcycle.
In the letter, MBC stated that the commission had noted the fact that RaajjeTV had failed to retract the misleading news report even after the police had given details explaining how the incident had truly occurred. Hence MBC ordered “RaajjeTV†to apologize and make a public statement regarding the matter in accordance with the broadcasting rules and regulations.
MBC further warned legal action against RaajjeTV under Article 44(c) of the broadcasting law if RaajjeTV commits any repeat offences against the broadcast code of practice.
MBC also stated that it had ordered RaajjeTV on July 12 to broadcast with full control over their content as several complaints had been received that station had breached broadcast ethics in covering the ongoing anti-government protests. The letter also stated that MBC had met with senior officers of RaajjeTV on July 17 to give advice to resolve the matter within legal contours.
In response to the issue, RaajjeTV Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdulla Yamin said that it was never intended to tarnish the reputation of the police and that RaajjeTV had aired the recording of the whole video of the police news conference regarding the matter.
