MDP, Raajje TV must be responsible for attacks on Police: Human Rights Ambassador

State Human Rights Ambassador Ahmed 'Sandhaanu Ahammaidhy' Ibrahim Didi has said today that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Raajje TV must take responsibility for the recent attacks on the Police. Speaking at a press conference held in the press room of Velaanaage he said that public calls are being made to hurt and defame the security forces and that several months have passed and no action has been taken against Raajje TV.

“Where is the Maldives Broadcasting Commission while unlawful content is being broadcast? They have to take responsibility for this too. The broadcasting commission should have prohibited the calls of violence,” he said.

He stressed that such crimes can only be prevented with the implementation of the Islamic Shariah which stipulates death for death. He said that it is necessary for the authorities to discuss and decide on the implementation of the death penalty and that no one can criticize a punishment set under Islamic Shariah.

“What right does a human have to kill another human? And what right does that human have to live in this world after taking the life of another? Thus the God’s final command should be the way in this matter. I do not believe that it (death sentence) violates any human rights,” he said.

He claimed that the MDP has launched a very public smear campaign and hate mongering against the Police, portraying them as violent via Raajje TV and condemned it.

“If there were no Police we would not sleep comfortably at night. If there was no MNDF our country would not remain independent. So I don’t believe that anyone who would try to tarnish the reputation of the security forces has the best interest of the country at heart,” he said.
