Freedom of expression now lost: Reeko Moosa

Hullhu-henveiru constituency MP Moosa 'Reeko' Manik has stressed that no one had been arrested during the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for making a remark, speech or phone call, but such freedom of expression has now been lost. Speaking at Usfasgandu are after the MDP march held in protest of the government and calling for early elections last night, Moosa said that the freedom of expression and speech enjoyed during the three years of the MDP government no longer exist.

Moosa’s statement came at a time when Police had publicized an alleged audio recording of a telephone conversation of former President Mohamed Nasheed who is heard expressing his desire to deploy people to fight the police.

Despite Moosa’s comments, audio clips of Kulhudhuffushi-south constituency MP Mohamed Nasheed, Mulak constituency MP Abdulla Yamin, Maamigili constituency MP Gasim Ibrahim and Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Nazim had been leaked during the MDP government. Many had accused that the audio clips had been leaked through the then government.

Speaking in relation to the Independence Day celebrated in the Maldives today, Moosa said the freedom to create political parties and hold political activities had been the result of earlier efforts of MDP. He also alleged that though the close aides of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had a thirst for power, they could not even mention the presidency back then.

While strongly criticizing President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, Moosa said that MDP had been unaware that Waheed would turn back and strike like a “poisonous snake” at the time he was selected as the Vice President.

“But at the end he was the mastermind who had struck down our government through the coup after lying patiently in wait and observing the policies of MDP,” he added.
