Ready to retract 'Gayoom's role in coup' claim: MDP

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Spokesperson Imthiyaz 'Inthi' Fahmy has stressed that the party was willing to retract its claims that former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had a role in the "coup" in order to facilitate the resumption of the All Party Roadmap Talks. Speaking during a MDP press conference yesterday Inthi revealed that the continuation of the All Party Talks had the backing of MDP. He added that the reason behind the support was to restore a democratic rule following the alleged “coup”.
Imthiyaz further detailed that former President Mohamed Nasheed had stated that his predecessor Gayoom had masterminded the “coup” after Gayoom’s own Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) members and MPs had claimed that Gayoom had played an integral role in the regime change.
“We truly wish to facilitate the All Party Talks. Hence in order to secure Gayoom’s participation in the discussions and due to the fact that the investigation of Commission National Inquiry (CNI) is ongoing and at least till the CNI report is issued, we want to take back the earlier statement by Nasheed and pave the way for the resumption of the Talks. Nasheed himself is of the same belief,” he detailed.
In a press release by the Secretariat of the Moderator for the All Party Talks, Ahmed Mujthaba stated that having considered the whole process in-depth, it had become apparent that a fresh approach had to be made.
He further stated that he had held a series of constructive meetings, separately, over the past month with the President and leaders of the largest political parties to discuss the prospects of continuing the political party talks.
“They have expressed a strong and shared belief in dialogue as the best way to address the challenges facing our nation. They agree that there are deep-rooted divisions and problems that must be resolved jointly if Maldives is to continue on its democratic path. I hope to secure the commitment of these parties to convene such a meeting at the highest level in the very near future.” the statement read.
