PPM, MDP supporters exchange obscenities

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) gathering held to protest against the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) treatment of the security forces resulted in heated exchange of obscenities between the two groups last night. MDP supporters on motorcycles while passing the PPM gathering held at the artificial beach last night at around 10.30 and had honked loudly as both set of supporters exchanged heated arguments. Two mini bags of paint were hurled at the PPM supporters from outside.

The MDP supporters who came near artificial beach from Usfasgandu direction on Boduthakurufaanumagu left the scene when traffic police arrived and started monitoring the traffic in the area.

Some high level PPM officials and MPs participated and spoke at the PPM gathering last night.

Speaking at the meeting, PPM council member Ahmed ‘Maaz’ Saleem said that the former President Mohamed Nasheed had promoted injustice during his term at office.

“I believe that Kenereege Mohamed Nasheed does not stay back during the major violations. Kenereege Mohamed Nasheed leads the injustice in this country. We are aware that Kenereege Mohamed Nasheed’s family has carried out all the coups till today,” he said.

Villi-Maafannu MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik said that one of the purposes of the PPM gathering is to show that the perpetrators who disrupt peace can be brought to justice within the contours of the law.

In general, the gathering called for an inquiry in to illegal activities lead by Nasheed and to arrest him. They also called out that law and order can only be restored once Nasheed gets his due punishments.

PPM interim Vice President Umar Naseer said that Nasheed is aware that the government cannot be toppled from the streets.

“Mohamed Nasheed is very much aware that the government cannot be toppled from the streets. Umar Naseer knows how it can be done” he said.

The other interim VP of PPM and Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla said that the PPM gatherings will be held every Saturday night throughout Ramadan.
