Over 100 people arrested in Direct Action protest so far: MDP

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has claimed that over 100 of its supporters had been arrested so far during the party's ongoing 'Direct, Immediate Action' protest. Speaking during a press conference held at the party’s office, MDP Spokesperson Imthiyaz ‘Inthi’ Fahmy stressed that “40 people had been arrested last night alone.” He added that the Court had ordered the release of most of the people that had been detained.

“But there are still several women in police custody. Court has extended the detention of some by 15 days. We are extremely concerned about that,” Inthi said in the press conference.

Police have yet to reveal the exact number of people that had been arrested during the MDP protest that began on June 8.

Imthiyaz further alleged that police had deliberately attacked media personnel covering the ‘Direct Action’ protest and added that police had pelted protesters with stones.

MDP Spokesperson vowed to continue with the protest and warned that the party would “step up several gears” on Thursday.

“Large numbers of people will partake in the protest tonight. The protests will continue until an early election date is announced,” Inthi pledged.

He also claimed that people from all across the Maldives were arriving in Male and added that a protest will be organized in Colombo this Sunday.
